Hosteria Malcanton – Great Seafood At Great Prices in Trieste
During our recent visit to Trieste we discovered a great place to enjoy traditional seafood of the region.
Hosteria Malcanton is a friendly and welcoming little restaurant just a short distance from the Italia Unita Square in central Trieste.
Seafood is the specialty of Hosteria Malcanton, and there is a range of fresh fish for your personal selection in a display cabinet at the entrance.
We were able to sample a number of the specialties of the region, and really enjoyed the flavours and presentation of the foods on offer.
The tuna tartare was an interesting appetizer dish. It consisted or raw tuna finely chopped (along the lines of the traditional steak tartare, with a number of herbs and spices chosen to complement and enhance the delicate taste of the tuna itself.
We also enjoyed the textures and flavours of the appetizer platter of mixed seafood. There was a stunning combination of sardines, anchovies, octopus, cuttlefish and mussels together with a seafood flavoured dip. All were absolutely fabulous.
Our main course options at the Hosteria Malcanton included fritti misti, a dish of fried whitebait with salad as well as some grilled tuna steaks.
We washed down our meals with some excellent house wine (red). The wine was so good that we felt the need to order a second carafe.
Guests at an adjacent table elected to order a whole fish from the display, and this emerged from the kitchen and was prepared for the table and served by the waiter in a very professional manner. Not only that, but the “oohs” and “aahs” from the table indicated that the fish was also very enjoyable.

Overall the service was excellent, and the knowledge of the owner and the waiter about the produce on offer and the wines to support the flavours was also very much appreciated.
We don’t hesitate in recommending Hosteria Malcanton to any lover of fresh seafood visiting the beautiful city of Trieste.
